bible formerly kept by Lorna Beecham:
"On Sunday morning there passed away to that bourne from whence no traveller
returns a very old colonist and a pioneer of the Boort district, in the person
of Mrs Barclay, senr. The sad event took place at deceased's late residence,
Lake View Sreet, Boort. The deceased lady who had attained the ripe old age of
86 years had only been ailing for a short time prior to her demise. The cause
of death was senile decay. The late Mrs Barclay came out to Geelong with her
husband in 1851. After carrying on the business of a general store there for
about seven years they removed to Ballarat and thence to Egerton, where they
entered into farming pursuits. The late Mr Barclay was in Ballarat in business
at the time of the riots in 1854, and had somewhat exciting experiences during
that troublous period, being on one occasion arrested for having been concerned
in the Eureka Stockade episode: he however obtained his release in proving that
he was not a miner and had had no connection with the riot. Amongst the first
selectors 28 years ago, Mrs Barclay with her husband and family settled in the
Boort district, where they selected, and where she resided until her demise.
Her husband predeceased her by a number of years. Deceased leaves a family of
three sons and two daughters, viz., Messrs Isaac and Walter W Barclay, of Boort,
and Mr John Barclay, of Ballarat, and Mrs D Wade, of Bolwarra, and Miss Barclay,
of Boort. The interment took place in the Boort cemetery on Tuesday, the Rev.
F Delbridge, Wesleyan Minister, conducted the funeral service. Mr H Rider carried
out the mortuary arrangements."
