unknown (HUGHES) was born about 1790. She died before 1841. ⁽⁵⁾ known only because Thomas Hughes was a widower when married in 1841

He was married to Clara Ann LAST (daughter of John LAST) on 19 Sep 1841 in St George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey, England.⁽⁶⁾ witnesses James Knight and Charity Oakly Clara Ann LAST was born about 1821. ⁽⁷⁾ age 20 She resided Stratford on 5 May 1890.⁽⁸⁾ Warning! might be another Clara Ann Hughes She was buried in 1915.⁽⁹⁾ age 94 (year needs checking) She was also known as Eastwood. ⁽²⁾ later surname Eastwood? Annie Hughes Salter writes in her booklet that Clara Anne Hughes and family +
sailed from London to Melbourne where she left her daughter Clara Hughes +
(Annie's mother) in a boarding school whilst she came on to NZ to establish a +
home in Dunedin. Eventually Clara was placed in the care of a schoolmaster and +
his wife who had seven children and a maid. While in her early teens Clara came +
over to NZ and landed at Port Chalmers by the first lighter. She was met by her +
mother in Dunedin.

Thomas Edmund HUGHES was born on 12 Jun 1844 in 1Tarling St, St George in the East, London, England.⁽¹⁰⁾ Tarling Street is near Shadwell Station; it runs from Sutton St East to Watney Street, between London Docks and the Commercial Road. He died in NZ age 29 in May 1873, from England - agrees with 1844 birth. He died on 31 May 1873 in Woodstock, Hokitika, New Zealand.⁽¹¹⁾

Clara HUGHES was born in 1852 in Brighton, Sussex. ⁽²⁾ not certain She was born on 24 Sep 1852 in 26 Bermondsey Square, Bermondsey, Surrey, England.⁽¹²⁾ one family source gives Leeds, another gives Brighton; but Bermondsey birth certificate has correct date and parents: Thomas Hughes (carpenter) and Anne Hughes formerly Last. She immigrated in 1861 to New Zealand.⁽¹³⁾ She died on 8 Jan 1918 in Stratford NZ. ⁽¹³⁾ see notes under mother, Clara Ann Hughes
